THEME:   I'll see when I believe

Introduction

When we published our first book of sketches with MediaCom three years ago, I think we somewhat ambitiously referred to it as “Volume 1”. Well something must have worked because here we are pumping out Volume 2.

Fortunately, the availability of material was never in question. In fact for this second volume, we’ve taken the opportunity to give you a bit of a mixture including some of our earliest sketches such as “Acts 10” and “Community” with a number of our more recent efforts such as “Follow Me” and “Joseph” and a lot of material in between.

Most of the sketches in this book have been concocted by Karan and I, but I must make special mention of the other contributors. My thanks go to a couple of inaugural “Bricks” (or pieces of masonry as we like to refer to ourselves) Linton Johnston and Neil Underwood for their permission to reproduce “Unemployed” and “Milo” in this volume. I also need to thank Neryl McCallum, and acknowledge that “A Walk in the Dark”, one of our more ambitious productions of recent times, was a collaborative effort, and one that we’re pretty pleased with!

It is also worth mentioning that the scripts that you see reproduced here may not look like they did when they were first penned. In rehearsing and performing a number of them over the years, they have been workshopped, adjusted, refined, and in some cases rewritten so that they worked to our satisfaction. So I must also express my thanks to all of the actors who have been part of ‘Bricks’ and have contributed to ensuring that these sketches are tried and tested.

As I mentioned in the introduction to Volume 1, please remember that these sketches are just that: Sketches as opposed to the full painting. There is just enough information for an audience to understand who the characters are and what’s going on. As such, we find that in performing these, sets, props and costumes can be left to a minimum. Most of the time you’ll be performing at the front of a church, so there is often not the opportunity to create elaborate sets and the dialogue between the characters should be sufficient to set the “scene”, aided of course by a table or chair or coffee mug etc as appropriate. The notable exception in this book is “The Cool War” … we have a trailer load of fencing material; garden implements and outdoor settings dedicated to that one sketch.

“The Greatest” will also need a bit of technical preparation – perhaps a power point slide show and some means of projecting it onto a screen or wall. We’ve also been fortunate when performing “A Walk in the Dark” that we have had access to a church hall adjacent to an open park or garden, a paved car park and a church with imposing front steps. It is important to have four discrete locations such as these between which a mobile audience can readily walk.

But don’t just follow my way of doing things. Have a go: try different stuff, experiment to see what works and what doesn’t, think about how you might use the performing space available to you. Create and enjoy.
