OFF THE PAGE
I love to write and I love to think about God. Although I am not theologically trained, I firmly believe that all people of faith are called upon to do theology: to examine their lives in the light of their faith and to examine what they believe in the light of their everyday lives. Professional, academic theologians are really important; ordinary, everyday theologians are too.
These faith reflections are arranged chronologically and have all been written since 2009, the year after I had my last collection published. In 2010 I started a weekly blog, in an effort both to maintain the discipline of reflecting on life each week, and also as a way to get my work ‘out there’ and read, in a world where opportunities for publishing my kind of writing seemed to be disappearing fast. About three-quarters of the pieces I have written over these years are not specifically faith-related; these are the remaining 25% that are. During that time, as well as putting my own stuff in cyberspace, my ‘faith columns’ have continued to be published in The Melbourne Age and, more often, in The Melbourne Anglican. All but one of the pieces in Off the Page have previously appeared in these two publications.
Because I am a writer, I often don’t know what I think about anything until I write it down. It’s as though I think through my fingers, not my head. Writing about God and about the complicated, rich, tough and wonderful life of a believer in Australia in the 21st century has helped my faith to develop and mature and deepened my love for God. If it has done the same for any of my readers, I am more than satisfied.
